It took place in New Haven County around 11:40 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 29, on the highway in Southbury, state police said.

According to police, it happened when a 2015 Subaru Outback and a 2012 Toyota Camry were headed east, one in the right lane and the other in the left, state police said.

A 52-year-old man, identified as Ricky Izzard, was standing on the right shoulder of the roadway when he began crossing and was struck by one car in the right lane and the other in the left, state police said.

Izzard was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Toyota’s driver, Chaim Bernstein, of Waterbury, was taken to Saint Mary’s Hospital with minor injuries, state police say.

It’s not clear why the man crossed the highway in front of the vehicles, police said.

Police continue to investigate.

Anyone who saw the collision is asked to call Trooper Ryan Lopez at the Troop A barracks in Southbury at 203-267-2200.
